Rainy Day · Lights & Popcorn

You've Seen All the Netflix.

It's raining. You've watched everything. You've scrolled back to the beginning and considered rewatching something you didn't even like the first time. This is not what you came to the Côte d'Azur for.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

Good news — this is the region that invented the film festival. There are actual cinemas here, in actual buildings, with actual screens. And yes, some of them show films in English. Version Originale, they call it — VO for short. That's your keyword. Remember it. It will change your afternoon entirely.

Below are the cinemas worth knowing about — where to find them, what they show, and which ones are the kind of place you'll want to go back to even when the sun returns. Which it will. It always does.

Nice · 4 rue de Rivoli

Cinéma Rialto

The go-to for English speakers in Nice since 1927. Five screens, all classified art house, always in original version with French subtitles. A few steps from the Negresco — independent, charming, and reliably showing something worth watching. Monday is the cheapest night. Students, seniors and people with good taste all qualify.

Cannes · 77 rue Félix Faure

Les Arcades

The only cinema in Cannes showing films in original version — which, in the home of the world's most famous film festival, feels both appropriate and long overdue. Three screens, independent programming, and the kind of place that feels like a proper cinema rather than a shopping mall with seats. Check the programme before you go.

Antibes · Quartier Maranda Lacan

Cinéplanet Antibes

The newest cinema on the Riviera — opened in 2023 with a Dolby Cinema screen, one of the best picture-and-sound experiences in the region. Regular VO screenings and a shared loyalty card with Les Arcades and Cinéum Cannes. Modern, comfortable, and worth the drive to Antibes for the right film.

Antibes · 6 avenue du 24 Août

CinéAzur Le Casino

A long-established and genuinely charming cinema at the top of Antibes Old Town, just opposite La Place Hotel. Regular VO screenings throughout the week — check the schedule in advance and look specifically for the VO label. Small, local, the kind of cinema that feels like it belongs to the neighbourhood. Which it does.
